At the Empire State Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Conference held in Rochester on April 18, Administrative Lieutenant Kevin Velzy accepted the first place award for the University Police entry in the New York State Law Enforcement Challenge.
This is a friendly competition between police agencies highlighting enforcement and education in the areas of driving while intoxicated, speeding, and occupant restraint.
The efforts are aimed at reducing traffic related deaths and injuries.
This is the fourth straight year that University Police at SUNY Oswego has won an award for “excellence in traffic safety enforcement and education,” and the second time they have taken first place in the College and University category.
The highlights of the program are the increase in educational programs offered to the SUNY Oswego students; increase in traffic tickets issued for aggressive driving and distracted driving violations; and an overall decrease in the number of motor vehicle crashes for the third year in a row.
The Law Enforcement Challenge is sponsored by the New York State Police, The National Highway Traffic Safety Association, and the National Association of Chiefs of Police.
